Smithing turns mined ore into bars at a Furnace, then bars into wearable gear at an Anvil. The short version: mine ore β smelt it into bars β craft the bars into gear. You earn XP twice for every bar β once when it's smelted, again when it's used in crafting. Only Helmets reliably turn a profit if you're buying your bars outright β Platebodies, Platelegs, and Swords all lose gold at Bronze/Iron/Steel tier once the cost of the bars is factored in. Once you reach level 30 and unlock Mithril, everything becomes very profitable, especially the Mithril Sword. == Getting Equipped == * Pickaxes and hammers must be equipped to mine or smith β carrying them in your bag isn't enough. * Players start with a Copper Pickaxe but no hammer; a basic Smithing Hammer costs 10g. * Smelting ore into bars doesn't need a hammer β only smithing bars into items does. * Pickaxes and hammers can't be crafted; you have to buy them. * Inventory is 28 slots, and ore, bars, and finished items all take one slot each β nothing here stacks. == Mining the Ore == Full mining routes and rates are covered in the Mining Guide β this is just the reference table for what Smithing needs. {| class="wikitable sortable" ! Tier !! Smelting XP per Bar |- | Bronze || 15 |- | Iron || 30 |- | Steel || 55 |- | Mithril || 155 |- | Gold || 800 |} For example, a Mithril Sword needs 6 Mithril Bars: smelting them gives 6 Γ 155 = 930 XP, and crafting the sword itself gives another 930 XP, for 1,860 XP total. == XP and Profit per Hour == These figures assume a full 28-slot inventory per cycle, real travel time between stations, and no downtime β treat them as upper bounds rather than guarantees. Bronze/Iron/Steel routes buy bars and sell finished items at the Blacksmith Stall in Valen Gate (except Iron Helmets, which are more profitable buying bars at Grave Town since they're 4g cheaper there). Mithril and Gold routes assume the ore/bars are already banked, since neither can be bought. === Bronze Tier (8g buy / 4g sell per bar, Valen Gate) === {| class="wikitable sortable" ! Method !! Method !! Smithing Level !! XP/Hr !! Craft it whenever you've got Mithril Bars banked and Smithing 34+. === Gold Tier (Gold Ore/Dust can't be bought β must be mined) === {| class="wikitable sortable" ! Method !! Smithing Level !! XP/Hr !! Profit/Hr |- | Mine ore/dust β smelt Gold Bars (Grave Town) || 40 || 178,144 || 56,115g |} Gold Plate, Volcanic Ring, and Volcanic Ward don't have confirmed crafting costs yet, so their EXP/hr and profit/hr can't be calculated. == Best Choice by Tier == {| class="wikitable" ! Tier !! Best for XP !! Best for Profit |- | Bronze || Bronze Sword || Bronze Helmet (the only profitable Bronze item) |- | Iron || Iron Sword || Iron Helmet (buy bars at Grave Town) |- | Steel || Steel Sword || Steel Helmet (Mining Gloves a solid second choice) |- | Mithril || Mithril Sword || Mithril Sword |- | Gold || β || Data not yet available |} == Best Early Money Method == Buying bars, smithing them into Helmets, and selling to a vendor is one of the best early-game gold methods: Helmets need fewer bars, sell for good vendor value, and don't require any Mining. Every other craftable β Platebody, Platelegs, Swords β actually loses gold at Bronze/Iron/Steel tier once the bar cost is factored in, since the bars cost more than the finished item sells for. * Buy bars from a stall or another player β smith Helmets β sell to a vendor β repeat. * Best returns: Bronze Helmet (~1,758g/hr), Iron Helmet (~8,514g/hr buying bars at Grave Town), Steel Helmet (~12,727g/hr). * Everything else at these tiers trains XP but loses gold β only worth it for training if you can absorb the loss, or if you're smelting your own bars instead of buying them. * Once you hit Smithing 30, switch to Mithril β every Mithril item is highly profitable, and the Mithril Sword is the best item in the guide for both XP and gold per hour.
